Robert Dowling Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Robert (Bob) Wagner Dowling announces that he passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years. Bob will be lovingly remembered by Olga, his wife of 66 years and his children Lori Dowling (Mike Dobbin) and Robert Dowling (Debbie) as well as numerous family members and friends.

One of his greatest passions was flying and he was proud to serve his country from 1942-1945 as a pilot in the R.C.A.F. #418 Squadron. This led to a lifelong commitment to the Royal Canadian Legion.

Bob married the love of his life, a nurse named Olga Louise Yewchin in 1952. Bob graduated from the University of Alberta in 1955 with a BSC in Pharmacy. He spent his first 3 years as a pharmacist in Sexsmith, Alberta.

Bob and Olga moved to Jasper, Alberta in 1958, realizing their dream of living in a mountain town and of owning and operating a drug store. He was always very involved in the community, volunteering with boy scouts, air cadets, the fire brigade, the Seton Hospital, Jasper School Board, and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary Clubs and the Masonic Lodge.

This love of community (and Alberta) led him into provincial politics in 1969. Bob felt privileged to serve as the Progressive Conservative MLA for the Edson Constituency from 1969 to 1980. During this time he was honoured to serve as a Cabinet Minister in the Lougheed government. In 1973 he served as the Commissioner for the R.C.M.P. Centennial. In 1977 he was involved in the Treaty 7 Centennial

celebrations. In the 1980’s Bob served as President of the Alberta Chamber of Commerce; the Commissioner of the Alberta 75th Anniversary celebrations and Commissioner of the Alberta Pavilion at Expo 86. From 1986-2004 Bob and Olga volunteered as CESO advisors with projects all around the world.

Bob enjoyed wonderful holidays, all around the world with his family and friends. Bob, Olga and the kids loved Jasper. The warmth of the mountain community embraced them and they made many friends. Bob loved the outdoors and was eager to share his love of geology, climbing, skiing, hiking and golfing with his family.

Above all Bob was a great family man who enjoyed spending time with his extended family. His quick wit, kind heart and resilient spirit were treasured by all who knew him.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Bob’s name to a charity of their choice.
